“The purpose of the work exchange experience is to actually give us an opportunity to see the big picture: to understand what someone else is also doing behind the scenes. I really think that’s good,” shared Mission Centers of Houston’s business manager, Vickie Glenn.

Each of Mission Centers of Houston’s full time staff members participate in a quarterly work exchange that allows them to volunteer in another area other than their own work sphere. This quarter, Glenn pitched in at the food pantry at Joy Center which offers food distribution three times a week to its community in Magnolia Park. After community members fill out a sign-in sheet when they first arrive, they then have an opportunity to share their concerns and receive prayer as well as Scriptural encouragement, if desired, before going on to receive their food allotment.

In addition to staying busy with stocking the shelves, Glenn also helped with taking down the number and tag information of the various clients that received food throughout the morning and guided them around to the various food stations. “When I first pulled up,” Glenn noted, “people were lined up outside the door, waiting to get in. They come, expecting and excited.” This week’s food distribution at Joy Center included meat with giant packs of hot dogs, a huge favorite with families and individuals alike.

“We are always in need of more volunteers,” Glenn finished after further reflection upon her time serving outside of the Administrative Building, “especially at our Joy Center. If you’re looking for an area to serve in, call us.”
