Assisting the homeless in Jesus’ name

Being homeless in Houston is not an easy lifestyle, especially with the year-round heat and humidity. You can feel isolated, alone, and empty of hope. That’s why we offer a caring hand and a place to go to receive tangible expressions of God’s love. This brings much needed hope and encouragement to those who need it most.

Our Gano Mission Center serves a large homeless population in Houston’s Near Northside. While we do not have facilities to offer temporary or overnight housing to our homeless clients, we offer assistance through:

  Weekly programs

On Mondays, from 12:00-1:00 pm, our homeless clients get a sit-down, restaurant-quality meal served in our air-conditioned or heated building, access to restrooms, a time of encouragement through personal interaction with our staff and volunteers, a ‘to go’ bag of shelf-stable food and hygiene items, and new or used clothes and other items to make homeless life a little easier.

Periodic ‘Bless the Homeless’ events (held on Saturdays every 4-6 weeks)

These events feature hot food, shower and laundry facilities, fresh clothes and supplies, entertainment, activities, the sharing of God’s Word, and a time of community fellowship and encouragement. We work alongside our supporting churches and organizations to provide these events. Check our calendar to find an upcoming event.

  Special events

Throughout the year, we hold special outreach events for our community and the homeless are welcome to attend (holiday meals, community block parties, etc.). To see upcoming special events, check out our calendar.

  Unscheduled visits

We’ll gladly greet anyone who knocks on our door throughout the week with a smile and offer them a bag of food and hygiene items. We invite them to come back on Mondays and any special events coming up.

We follow the teaching of Jesus Christ in Luke 10:25-37

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus shared what it meant to “love your neighbor as yourself”. It involves having compassion for those who have fallen on hard times and need help, then spending the time and resources needed to provide assistance. That’s exactly what we aim to do through our mission work with the homeless.
