“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game,” prayed a former seminarian intern back in 1990, “help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”
Every month, close to 2,500 people from over 5 different zip codes receive groceries from Mission Centers of Houston’s food pantries, located at our Gano and Joy Fellowship Centers. Elderly grandparents, non-English speaking single parents, disabled veterans, homeless, mothers with 3 kids tailing behind them (and 6 or 7 more at home), recently unemployed adults and others struggling to make ends meet are regular recipients of our food supplies — and on a distressingly frequent basis, clients will turn to a staff or volunteer and thank them with heartfelt gratitude, noting that they would be otherwise unsure as to where that week’s meals would come from. As Super Bowl weekend draws near and many are already filled with excitement as they prepare to cheer on their favorite pigskin-throwing player, we are excited to invite you to join in our annual Souper Bowl of Caring participation.
Mission Centers of Houston relies on donations from churches and individuals to sustain the ministry. Our 2013 budget needs $20,000 to come from the Souper Bowl of Caring. This fundraiser only asks for $1 from each person to tackle hunger in Houston. All you need to do is have youth or children hold soup pots for the donations at the exits of your worship centers at the close of your Sunday service on February 3, 2013. Invite each person to drop a $1 donation in the soup pot and then mail your donation directly to Mission Centers of Houston. You can also mark “Souper Bowl” on personal checks and mail all donations to the address below. Be sure to let us know that your church will partner with us on Souper Bowl Sunday so we can make sure to be in prayer for your services. Together, small yet faithful gifts can make a huge difference — let’s go, team!
