This summer, Mission Centers of Houston’s family ministries coordinator, Karenie Reyes, will be launching a 6-week series of classes focused on training, empowering and encouraging the mothers of our kids, pre-teens and teens. Center staff, members of Kerusso Grace Church and other community leaders will help cover a variety of topics, including health, finances, marriage, communication skills and conflict resolution, cooking, and more.
“When I first asked them what they would like to focus on,” Reyes shared about the women from the Near Northside community that will be participating in the classes, “they said, ‘Well — our kids.’ And I said, ‘But what about you?’ And all they said was, ‘Well, maybe… with our husbands?’ So you see, they really don’t have a very strong identity as women outside of their role as wives and mothers. It’s difficult. So what I hope is that having the time to be themselves by themselves,” Reyes concluded, “will help them to take better care of themselves which will in turn help them to be better moms and better wives.”
The main portion of the classes will take place in the Mildred McWhorter Missionary Building where our administrative staff office; the last 30 minutes, however, will include zumba lessons and these will take place in the Gano gym. “I want it to be a fun time with them that they will really enjoy,” Reyes noted with enthusiasm. “I’m also really excited about building relationships with them on a deeper level.” Up to 15 women from the community can participate in the 6-week series of classes, taking place from 3-5 pm every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
One specific way to join in investing in the lives of the women in our community is to contribute in providing coffee, water and/or healthy snacks for one or more of the classes. If interested, contact Karenie for further information at [email protected].
