Since the spring of 2019 we have been renovating an 85 year old house at our Fletcher Mission Center.  This home, which was once called ‘The Mexican Baptist Goodwill Center’, is where Mission Centers of Houston got its start in 1962.  Due to its age and poor condition the house has been unlivable for the past 10 years.  Our plan is for Juan and Lucia Ayala, our Near Northside area missionaries, to move in once the renovation is complete so they can live in the community in which their mission work is focused.
Thanks to Juan’s leadership and the many hours given by over 100 volunteers from a number of our church partners the work is over halfway done.  The entire interior of the house was gutted down to the studs (including mold remediation and removal of old plumbing and wiring).  A new roof was installed and about 90% of the new interior framing, plumbing and wiring is now complete.  Through our church partners we’ve received donations of sheetrock, insulation, HVAC equipment, doors, plumbing fixtures, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, carpeting and vinyl tile.  Since our funds are very limited this has really helped make this project feasible.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO FINISH THE RENOVATION!
We are asking for volunteer groups and monetary donations to help us finish the renovation work, hopefully by year-end.  We need to purchase more HVAC equipment, windows, lighting fixtures, and kitchen appliances.  The work that is yet to be done (volunteers needed) is (1) Finish subflooring installation, (2) Install insulation and fill gaps and cracks, (3) Install remaining soffit, fascia, flashing, etc., (4) Correct drainage problem to prevent water from collecting under house, (5) Install sheetrock, (6) Repair window frames and install new windows, (7) Install new doors and trim, and (8) Texture and paint.
For more information, to volunteer (group or individual), or make a donation (either financially or in-kind) please contact our Executive Director, Jeff Chadwick, at [email protected] or (804) 878-6614.
